COMMENTARY
Revelation 14:13-20 describes the eternal reward of the faithful and the final judgment of the wicked. It contains a promise of rest for believers, followed by two vivid harvesting visions representing God’s ultimate wrath.
The Passage Breakdown
-
A Blessing for Believers (v. 13): A voice from heaven proclaims that those who die in the Lord are "blessed." They will rest from their earthly toils, and their good deeds will follow them into eternity.
-
The Harvest of the Earth (vv. 14-16): John sees a figure "like a Son of Man" (representing Jesus) seated on a white cloud, wearing a golden crown and holding a sharp sickle. At an angel's command, He swings His sickle to reap the earth.
-
The Winepress of God's Wrath (vv. 17-20): Another angel arrives with a sharp sickle and is instructed by an angel from the altar (who has power over fire) to harvest the "clusters of the vine of the earth". These grapes are thrown into the "great winepress of God's wrath". The winepress is trampled outside the city, and blood flows out as high as the horses' bridles for a distance of \(1,600\) stadia (roughly 180 to 200 miles).
Symbolism & Significance
-
The Harvest: Generally interpreted as the gathering of the righteous at the end of the age, or the gathering of the wicked for judgment.
-
The Grapes: Represents the unbelieving world and the culmination of human wickedness, crushed under the weight of divine justice.
-
The Blood: The vivid, shocking imagery of blood rising to a horse's bridle for roughly \(200\) miles symbolizes the total, devastating scale of God's final judgment against evil.
