COMMENTARY

The two witnesses in Revelation 11 are generally interpreted as either literal, end-time prophets (likely Moses and Elijah) or symbolic representations of the Church's faithful testimony during the Tribulation. They prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth, and possess miraculous powers to protect themselves before being killed, resurrected, and ascending to heaven.

Key Themes and Interpretations:

    • Identity - Literal Interpretation: Many, including Dr. David Jeremiah, interpret them as two literal, physical individuals, often believed to be Moses and Elijah returning to Earth due to their miracles resembling plagues (turning water into blood, closing the sky) and their appearance at the Transfiguration.

  • Identity - Symbolic Interpretation: Others, according to Andrew Forrest and Ligonier Ministries, view the witnesses as symbols of the Church or the "two lampstands" (representing the faithful testimony of God's people throughout the Church Age) proclaiming the gospel.
  • Ministry & Death: They are empowered to witness for 1,260 days, acting as "two olive trees". They are killed by the Beast from the bottomless pit, their bodies lie in the streets of Jerusalem for three and a half days, and the world celebrates their death before God resurrects them.
  • Message: Their message focuses on repentance, judgment, and the authority of God, acting as a final warning before the seventh trumpet.

Contextual Commentary:

  • Location: The witnesses testify in a city described as Sodom and Egypt (symbolically Jerusalem), where their message brings conflict.

  • Purpose: Their purpose is to bear witness for Christ in a time of intense darkness and opposition.

  • Significance: Their death and subsequent resurrection mirror the resurrection of Christ, providing a moment of final vindication against their enemies.
