Hebrews 1
Who is Jesus?

I have been pondering Hebrews since Pastor's sermon on Sunday! So much revelation!

***********************

Hebrews 1 is a powerful theological prologue establishing the absolute supremacy and deity of Jesus Christ. The author immediately contrasts past revelations through Old Testament prophets with the ultimate, final revelation given through God's Son, proving that Jesus is superior to both the prophets and the angels. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The Supreme Revelation (Verses 1–4)

  • God has spoken: In history, God spoke piecemeal through prophets via diverse ways (dreams, visions, events).

  • The Final Word: In these "last days," God speaks definitively through His Son rather than just through a messenger.

  • The Sevenfold Glory of Christ: Verse 3 details Jesus as the heir of all things, the creator of the world, the radiance of God's glory, the exact imprint of His nature, the sustainer of the universe, the purger of sins, and the ruler seated at the right hand of God. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Superiority to the Angels (Verses 5–14)

  • Name and Status: Jesus holds a superior, inherited "Son" title that no angel was ever given (v. 5).

  • Worship and Reign: God commands angels to worship the Son (v. 6), whose throne is eternal and righteous (vv. 8–9).

  • Service vs. Sovereignty: Angels are described as ministering spirits sent to help believers, while Jesus is the sovereign Lord seated at God's right hand.
